Andrew Redmayne became the hero after his late arrival against Peru
Substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne was the hero as Australia reached the 2022 World Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Peru in their playoff in Doha on Monday.
With the game remaining goalless as the end of extra-time approached, Redmayne – making just his third senior appearance for the Socceroos – was sent on by Australia coach Graham Arnold to replace Mat Ryan in goal.
The 33-year-old did all within his power to unnerve the Peruvian penalty takers in the shootout, dancing on the line before each penalty.
Redmayne antics gave Australia the edge after early shootout setback
Though Martin Boyle failed to score Australia’s first penalty, Peru’s advantage was lost when Luis Advíncula struck the post – Redmayne appearing to get a glove to it on the way.
The shootout progressed to sudden death when, with Australia leading, Redmayne denied Alex Valera, sparking wild celebrations amongst his teammates, who quickly mobbed him.

Australia the 31st nation to reach the 2022 World Cup
Australia, reaching their fifth successive World Cup, are the 31st team to book their place in Qatar later this year. They will be in Group D, alongside holders France, Denmark and Tunisia.
The final team to reach the tournament will be decided on Tuesday when Costa Rica play New Zealand. As was the case with Australia’s win over Peru, the game will be played in Doha’s the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.
