It’s going from bad to worse for Barca
According to reports, Barcelona could sue several of their own players if they refuse to take proposed pay cuts. The pay cuts are necessary for the club to stay afloat and lawsuits would likely only further suit the board as it tries to put a dent in the crippling Catalan debt.
Barca are struggling to register several of their new summer signings as they are already well and truly above the wage cap when it comes to their current players. It is estimated that Spanish giants are currently in over a billion euros worth of debt.
While the star player Lionel Messi has reportedly agreed to a hefty pay cut – the club hoping to resign him after he became a free agent – the likes of Samuel Umtiti, Miralem Pjanic and, surprisingly, long-time servant, Jordi Alba.
Although the hope is that the likes of other veterans such as Gerard Pique, Sergi Roberto and Sergio Busquets will strike deals in the near future, Mundo Deportivo has said that Barcelona are getting seriously worried that other high earners may not agree to the wholesale pay reduction.
While the belief is that these players will eventually relent to the pay cuts and that legal action won’t be necessary, they have until August 15th to sort the salary cuts. If not, we could well see a club take its own players to court over after mismanaging their own finances.
Oh, how the mighty hath fallen.
