Benoit Assou-Ekotto says no to lucrative boot sponsorship deals.
The former Tottenham Hotspur player, who now togs out for Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1 prefers the cheaper option when it comes to his choice of boots. He explained to Canal +, that the big money boot sponsorship deals are fine for Europeans, but he feels they’re a bad idea for professional footballers from Africa.
“I’d rather be free than prostitute myself for a sponsor.”
“In all honesty, when you’re an African player, it’s not that interesting to have a sponsor. When you’re European, it’s better because business is done in Europe.”
The former Cameroon international revealed that when he’s buying gear, he’s just as big a fan of bargains as everyone else. He explained that his go-to store for football boots is eBay.
“I buy shoes for €30. It’s a good price for comfortable boots. You can find them on eBay, and they’re not expensive.”
“Being fashionable is expensive, but you’re more distinguished to be vintage.”
Yeah, we’re not entirely sure that last line makes sense either.
