Sorry Karens, no returns today because I’m watching the footie
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has urged companies to allow staff to leave early on Tuesday ahead of England’s Euro 2020 quarter-final with Germany.
Though flexible working is undoubtedly becoming more popular post-pandemic, no one would think this included watching the football. However, as seen in Japan recently, open approaches to flexible working can increase productivity, better mental health, and a more positive approach to working.
TUC tweeted about the suggestion:
Bosses should give staff time off to watch the footy.

“Bosses should talk to their staff and try to let people who want to watch games do so – at work or home – and then claim back the time afterwards.
“Whether it’s about major sporting events like Euro 2020, attending a medical appointment or picking up the kids from school, allowing people more flexibility in how and when they do their work makes them happier.
“It cuts absenteeism and raises productivity.”
Dan Roach had the following to say on Twitter:
“As excitement builds ahead of England v Germany tomorrow, bosses are being urged to give workers time off to watch the match.”
Punishing workers yet again when we’ve done nothing wrong. 😜— Dan Roach (@DanielRoachLFC) June 28, 2021
Twitter user Choxaway clearly is less keen:
Can I have time off to watch the sport of my choice? https://t.co/dXqpzSnmbh

In truth, it is unlikely that English business owners will allow workers across the board to finish early to watch the game. Still, there’s always a chance that if you sneak out to watch the game, they won’t catch you*.
*We absolutely do not condone sneaking out of work early
