Boxer Billy Joe Saunders won big betting £5,000 on Tyson Fury world title victory

Another boxer mugs the bookies...

It seems like the boxing fraternity have really got one over on the bookies.

Betting firms didn’t give Tyson Fury a hope in hell of smashing the decade-long reign of Wladimir Klitschko and neither did anyone else.

But fellow boxers obviously fancied the unbeaten 27-year-old Brit ….and there were odds being offered that were obviously too tempting to ignore.

We already know that former British light-welterweight champion Curtis Woodhouse won a staggering £72,000 on a treble which included a Tyson Fury victory.

But now fellow British fighter Billy Joe Saunders revealed that he stuck a huge £5,000 wad on his old pal Fury to do the business.

The commonwealth champ, who is set to fight Irishman Andy Lee for his WBO middleweight title, cleaned up thanks to the Mancunian’s heroics in Dusseldorf, relieving the bookies of a cool £22,500.

He said: “Thanks to Tyson I’ve just bought myself a nice little Audemars Piguet, a new watch on him from my winnings, so thank you very much, Mr Fury.

“Nobody was happier than me that he won – and not just because I won a few quid.

“I’ve seen where he has come from, where he started, and I know he will feel the same about me.”
