Joe Gomez caught the eye in Liverpool’s goalless draw at Arsenal, and his new manager is already a big fan.
A summer signing from Charlton Athletic, the 18-year-old has a bright future ahead of him according to Liverpool boss, Brendan Rodgers, who has been impressed by Gomez’s performances in a position he is far from used to playing.
“He’s playing in his third-best position in the back four,” Rpdgers said. “He’s a centre-half, but we asked him if he had confidence to play on the left side.”
Gomez has already represented England at under-19 level, and following an assured start to his Liverpool career, Rodgers is well aware of the youngster’s calibre.
“You’ve seen from the three games, he’s a wonderful athlete. He’s fast, he’s a good size, but he’s also got a good football brain.
“He’s a very, very good personality to play at this level, he’s very humble.
“He knows he’s still got a lot to learn, but we know we’ve got an outstanding talent.”
Forming part of a defence that has yet to concede in Liverpool’s three league games, the youngster looks set to continue at left back when Liverpool host West Ham.
