Fabregas is reportedly on the verge of leaving Chelsea

Cesc Fabregas missed a penalty in what reports are claiming to be his final game in English football.

The Spanish midfielder stepped up to take the penalty in Chelsea’ FA Cup Third Round tie at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, only for the spot-kick to be saved by Luke Steele.

Ahead of the game, numerous reports claimed the former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder, who has struggled to feature regularly under Maurizio Sarri this season, was poised to leave Chelsea imminently.

The 31-year-old is out of contract in the summer and, according to Sky Sports, Chelsea are nearing an agreement with AS Monaco over his sale.

Although Sarri has expressed a desire to keep Fabregas, it’s thought his move to the Ligue 1 side will be finalised soon – possibly ahead of Chelsea’s League Cup game away at Tottenham in midweek.

Should Fabregas move to Monaco, he will be reunited with former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry, who is currently their manager.

Henry took over the struggling side earlier in the season but has so far been unable to lift them out of the relegation zone. They currently sit in 19th, having lost their last game to bottom club Guingamp.

Despite Fabregas’ penalty miss, Chelsea later took the lead through his countryman, Alvaro Morata, who added a second minutes later.
