Chelsea have unveiled a red and blue third kit, saying it is inspired by kits of the past and a classic pair of Nike trainers

It’s a London Chelsea Palace thing

Chelsea have unveiled their third kit, confirming what had been leaked a long time ago: it’s red and blue and it’s stripey.

The design has received a mixed response ever since it was originally leaked, and official confirmation has only ramped up the emotions from both Chelsea fans and their rivals.

Chelsea say the red and blue design is inspired by the the Nike Ultramine Air Max 180 trainers, as well as classic shirt from the past. Call me a cynic but that feels like doubling down on justifying a controversial design to appease angry fans.

Many fans on Twitter have responded by suggesting Nike and Chelsea should give the kit to Crystal Palace, whose home colours are of course red and blue stripes.

Others have criticised the idea of it being inspired by a pair of trainers, and the notion that this shirt can be considered “a Chelsea thing.”

Even the Crystal Palace account has weighed in on the debate, saying ‘#ItsNotThoughIsIt’.

Chelsea fans can take some solace in the fact that they’ve had a very active transfer window, bringing in some of the best young players in the world. Just pretend you’re watching peak Barcelona. Or peak Crystal Palace, both of them work.
