The incident took place during a practice session on Wednesday
Chris Froome is out of this year’s Tour de France after what was described as a “very serious accident” during a practice session during the Criterium du Dauphine in Roanne, France on Wednesday.
The news was confirmed by Team Ineos’ team principal Dave Brailsford, who revealed that it would be “quite a long time” before the 34-year-old – who has won four Tour de France titles – returns to cycling.
It’s believed that Froome broke his leg after crashing into a wall while travelling at 60 kilometres per hour.
Team INEOS can confirm that Chris Froome crashed during a recon of stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine today.
He is currently on his way to a local hospital and won’t start today’s fourth stage.

“He crashed in the downhill section of the course at high speed. He hit a wall,” team principal Dave Brailsford told France Televisions. “It’ll take quite a long time before he races again.
“The ambulance came quickly. He’s been taken care of and waits for a helicopter to be transferred to Lyon or Saint-Etienne.
“It’s a very serious accident. Clearly, he won’t be at the start of the Tour de France.”
