Cristiano Ronaldo forced off with injury during Portugal match against Serbia

Ronaldo joins Lionel Messi on the sidelines, these are end times

Cristiano Ronaldo was forced off with an injury during Portugal’s Euro 2020 qualifier at home to Serbia on Monday. The Juventus star went down with what appeared to be a hamstring injury in the first half, at a time when Portugal were trailing 1-0 to a Dusan Tadic goal.

The home side got a goal back after their talisman went off, through Porto midfielder Danilo, but understandably it was the injury to Ronaldo that has grabbed the headlines.

Though it remains to be seen how serious his injury is, in being forced off the pitch Ronaldo joins rival Lionel Messi on the sidelines, after the Barcelona wizard suffered a pelvic injury during Argentina’s defeat to Venezuela.

Argentina lost the match 3-1, and Messi picked up an injury that has ruled him out of his country’s second friendly of the international break, against Morocco on Tuesday, and could potentially keep him out of the first leg of Barcelona’s quarter-final tie against Manchester United.

The injuries to both of these superhuman footballers may just be a coincidence, or they may be the first two horsemen of the apocalypse; it’s hard to know at this point.

If nothing else, the period that the two spend on the sidelines will give us an unwelcome and frankly terrifying taste of what football will be like without them. We’re not ready for this, at all.
