He’s only got 658 to choose from…
Over the course of his 16-year career, Cristiano Ronaldo has evolved from skinny, tricky winger to physically dominant goal machine. Along the way, he has racked up 658 goals, averaging more than one goal per game during his nine years at Real Madrid.
At Real Madrid his evolution as a player brought him closer to the goal, meaning he scored more tap ins that screamers, but his catalogue of goals includes strikes of all kinds. Choosing a favourite is difficult for fans, let alone for Ronaldo himself, but the Juventus forward has managed to nail it down to just one. And it shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise.
Yes, it’s the overhead kick against Juventus in last season’s Champions League. Dani Carvajal floated the ball into the penalty area and with space around him, Ronaldo saw the perfect opportunity to execute the trick he had been trying to pull off his entire career. With textbook technique, he got over the ball and fired it down, past Gigi Buffon.
The home fans were in such a state of awe that many gave him a standing ovation; something Ronaldo cites as one of the reasons he decided to join the club.
“It was the best goal in my career so far,” he said when he was unveiled as a global ambassador for streaming service DAZN.
“It was an unbelievable moment.
“And, of course, when the people start to applaud me in the stadium I was like, ‘wow’.
“It surprised me a lot because this has never happened in my life, so it was an unbelievable moment.”
