Liverpool and Southampton are never off the bloody phone with one another.
While most of the phonecalls involve the Reds offering huge fees for Saints players, apparently there may be one taking place in the next few weeks which will see someone move in the opposite direction.
The Telegraph reports that Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino is eager to bring out-of-favour forward Daniel Sturridge in on a loan deal for the remainder of the season.
Hard luck with injuries has meant that Sturridge never really managed to nail down a starting place at Anfield and with the so-called ‘Fab Four’ of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho firing on all cylinders for Jurgen Klopp’s side, Sturridge is well aware that his contribution to the cause will be limited to cup competitions and substitute appearances for the foreseeable future.
A hamstring injury to Charlie Austin has left Pellegrino short in the attacking department and while he’s also looking at permanent options, a loan move for Sturridge is right up there on the Southampton manager’s wishlist for the January transfer window.
The 28-year-old hasn’t featured in the Premier League for over a month and with the World Cup fast approaching, it may be worth his while to pursue first-team football elsewhere if he is to put himself in with a shout of making Gareth Southgate’s squad.
And having just seen a cool £75 million arrive in their bank account after agreeing to part ways with Virgil van Dijk, Southampton would be more than able to afford Sturridge’s wages for the next six months.
It makes sense for everybody involved, really.
