And so the long, familiar road to recovery begins
Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on a broken ankle after suffering a devastating break during Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Sporting Clube de Portugal last Thursday, Unai Emery has confirmed.
Welbeck was given oxygen and stretchered from the pitch in a leg brace after an awkward landing left him in agonising pain as he lay on the Emirates pitch.
Speaking after Arsenal’s home draw to Wolves on Sunday afternoon, Emery confirmed that the forward had undergone surgery and admitted that he cannot put a timescale on Welbeck’s return.
“The ankle is broken, we will be without him for a long time,” Emery said.
“The best thing for him now is to think about the person,” the Arsenal coach added.
Emery expressed his sympathy with Welbeck on Twitter, wishing him a speedy recovery from yet another injury setback – something that’s become far too familiar for the 27-year-old forward.

“He is a very good person, his commitment with us is a very big commitment,” Emery said.
“He helps us with his quality and capacity. This injury is very big for him, for us and for all people who like and love him as a person.”
