No prizes for guessing which two clubs he’s most likely to join
It’s the middle of November. Far, far too early to be getting excited about the summer transfer window. And yet, thanks to David Alaba, here we are, already wondering where he might end up plying his trade next season.
The Austrian has been a big part of Bayern Munich’s success over the last few years – a nine-times Bundesliga winner and a starter in both the 2013 and 2020 Champions League final victories.
This season, however, looks destined to be his last in Bavaria. Now in the final year of his contract, Bayern withdrew their offer of a new contract recently, with director Hasan Salihamidzic suggesting he is likely to move on at the end of the current campaign.
Where, exactly, is still anyone’s guess, but it does seem like the Premier League is an increasingly likely destination for the 28-year-old. Despite firm interest from Manchester City and Liverpool in the summer, 90min report Alaba’s desire to play in Spain saw him focused on a move to either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
With a swicth to LaLiga failing to materialise, the same report adds that a source close to the player had indicated that Alaba was now open to a move to the English top flight.
Pep Guardiola, assuming he remains at Manchester City, has already managed Alaba during his tenure at Bayern. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp knows all about him from his time at Borussia Dortmund, while Thiago Alcantara made the move from Bayern to Anfield in the summer. As a boyhood Arsenal fan, a switch to London may also prove tempting.
Alaba will be able to negotiate deals with other clubs as soon as January, though a recent report from Sky suggested he would only focus on his future after the winter transfer window had closed.
