The goalkeeper has been stalling on renewing his contract with the club

Manchester United are reportedly set to activate David De Gea’s one-year option on his contract which is due to expire in the summer of 2019.

Had De Gea’s current contract been allowed to run until January of next year, the Spain number one – who joined the Red Devils in 2011 – would have been eligible to begin talks with clubs over a lucrative free transfer.

The move by United will ensure that the club will at least receive some amount of compensation for the 28-year-old, who is widely considered one of if not the best goalkeeper in world football.

While De Gea has yet to sign a contract which was speculated to have been agreed previously, it has been reported that he is open to remaining at the club.

According to reports, both he and his representatives have been mindful of the enormous contract handed to Alexis Sanchez upon his arrival at the club from Arsenal.

It is reported that the Chilean attacker – who has struggled enormously since joining the club – earns approximately £350,000 per week, while de Gea – undoubtedly the team’s most important player – reportedly earns £200,000 per week.
