The sight of Louis van Gaal straying from his normal position in the home team’s dugout was enough to prompt cheers of delight from the Old Trafford crowd…but what he did next nearly lifted the roof off the stadium.
With his Manchester United side clinging to a slender 3-2 lead over title-chasing Arsenal in the game’s closing stages, the Dutchman clearly became exasperated with some of the refereeing decisions being given to the visitors.
Making his feelings known to fourth official Mike Dean, van Gaal theatrically threw himself to the floor, presumably making the point that some of the Arsenal players were doing the same. Given that it was Oscars night, it was all quite fitting.
As you’d expect, many were amused by his actions.
Following the game, United’s goalkeeper David De Gea reassured the club’s supporters that their 64-year-old manager was fine after his tumble.
A united team overcomes all obstacles! ⚽️⚽️ Outstanding Old Trafford! And don't worry, our Mister is ok!😉 pic.twitter.com/aChV0zmCpt
