The famous slip helped end Liverpool’s title ambitions
It is five years since Demba Ba capitalised on a slip by former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard to score at Anfield and help bring an end to the title ambitions of Liverpool.
Brendan Rodgers’ team had gone into the final three games of the 2013/14 season with a five point lead over Chelsea and a nine point lead over eventual champions Manchester City, who had two games in hand at the time.
They looked all but certain to win the title, before a 2-0 defeat at home to Chelsea – aided by that Steven Gerrard slip – brought about the beginning of the end of their dreams.
Discussing the now infamous incident, the beneficiary of that slip – Demba Ba – has revealed that he doesn’t feel sorry for Gerrard after the unfortunate footwear malfunction.
“I didn’t feel sorry for him,” the Istanbul Basaksehir forward told The Sun. “I’m not a Steven Gerrard supporter. I’m not a Liverpool supporter.
“I’m not a Man City supporter or happy that they won the league.
“It’s all part of the game. It’s the same as Crystal Palace last year when they were safe and had nothing to play for, they went and played at Stoke and sent them down by winning. You go and do your job, you go to win.”
Liverpool go into Sunday’s match against Chelsea at Anfield with their greatest chance of winning the league since that 2013/14 season. They currently sit two points ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand and face Crystal Palace earlier in the day.
