Maguire is not present at the trial
Further details of Harry Maguire’s arrest on the Greek island of Mykonos on Thursday night have emerged on the first day of his trial.
Maguire was arrested last week alongside two friends during a night out in Mykonos, where he was holidaying with family, friends and Manchester United teammates Marcus Rashford and Brandon Williams.
Though Maguire has since returned to Manchester, he is being represented by a legal team made up of lawyers from Mykonos, and one from Athens believed to have been appointed by Manchester United. He denies all charges made against him.
Martha Kelner of Sky News has been reporting on the case, and has revealed details from Maguire’s legal team over what he claims to have happened.
Maguire’s lawyer, Alexis Anagnostakis, claims that the altercation with police came about after two Albanian men approached his sister and injected her with a fluid.
This, he claims, made her ‘immediately’ faint.
Defence say that when they arrived at police station they were assaulted by officers who kicked Harry on his leg telling him “your career is over”.

Maguire’s lawyer also claims that upon arrival at the police station, the men were attacked by police offers who kicked Maguire’s leg and said “your career is over”.
In response, the prosecution allege that Maguire, who was made Manchester United captain last season, attempted to use his reputation to avoid charges, saying: “Do you know who I am? I am the captain of Manchester United, I am very rich, I can give you money, I can pay you, please let us go.”

Maguire’s legal team had hoped for a postponement to the case, but that request was denied. Maguire faces charges of aggravated assault.
