Whose bright idea was that?
It should be first pointed out that there was absolutely no need for any of the 26 fighters competing on the UFC 218 card to step on the scales on Friday night.
Everyone had already weighed in during the *actual* weigh-ins at their hotel earlier that day but, for some reason, the UFC persists with their ceremonial weigh-ins for the benefit of fans and photographers.
So basically, hours after fighters weigh in and rehydrate, they pretend to weigh in and then face off with their opponents.
It’s weird, completely unnecessary and it almost claimed a couple of lives in Detroit on Friday evening.
On more than one occasion, a fighter stepped up to the scales on the stage, only for it to roll forward and come perilously close to falling straight over the edge.
The floor was several feet below the precipice of the stage so it would have resulted in serious injury to anyone who hadn’t been quick enough to step off before it nearly teetered off.
First, Charles Oliveira was almost sent tumbling into a late withdrawal from the event.

And then strawweight Tecia Torres was clearly given a fright as she came close to disaster…

Here’s some advice for the UFC… Perhaps find some sort of braking mechanism for the scales so that your star athletes don’t break their legs or, even better, maybe do away with the ceremonial weigh-ins altogether.
