‘I think it’ll take place in May’
Eddie Hearn has revealed that the rematch between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk is set to take place in May, with London touted as a possible destination.
Talks have been underway ever since the meeting between the pair in September when Joshua lost to Usyk by a unanimous points decision in September.
The former Olympic gold medalist immediately triggered a rematch clause as a result however recently considered stepping aside to allow the Ukrainian to fight Tyson Fury in an undisputed heavyweight showdown.
Despite initial reports suggesting he would, Joshua wasn’t willing to move aside, and Fury now preparing to fight Dillian Whyte, plans are being put in place for the original bout to happen.
Hearn is Joshua’s promoter and he told iFL TV that a fight in May is a possibility along with hopes the fight could be held in London.
“We’re looking at potential sites, we’ve got meetings next week around the world to look at where that fight might take place,” Hearn said.
“I’d love it to take place in London. I think it’ll take place in May, and we’ll speak to (Team Usyk) and get that nailed on, and hopefully get it announced before the end of the month.
There’s the UK, America, the Middle East – we’ve had offers all around the world for that fight. I’d like to do it in the UK and we’ll see.”
