Edinson Cavani has issued an apology for a social media post he uploaded on Sunday following Manchester United’s victory over Southampton.
After Cavani’s two headed goals sealed victory for United, the Uruguayan striker shared several messages of congratulations to his Instagram story, adding messages of thanks to those sending them in.
One such post included the use of a term that has landed him in hot water and could lead to a three match ban, pending an investigation.
Both the player and Manchester United have issued statements on the matter.
Cavani said there was no malicious intent and apologised for causing offence.
“The message I posted after the match after the match on Sunday was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game” he said.
“The last thing I wanted to do was cause offence to anyone. I am completely opposed to racism and deleted the message as soon as it was explained that it can be interpreted differently.
“I would like to sincerely apologise for this.”

Manchester United issued a statement, saying: “It is clear to us that there was absolutely no malicious intent behind Edinson’s message. He deleted it as soon as he was informed that it could be misconstrued.
“Edinson has issued an apology for any unintentional offence caused.
“Manchester United and all of our players are fully committed to the fight against racism.”
