What do cricketers do during a rain break? Play football, obviously
Every Sunday league football team in the country has tried this at some point. You’re in the changing rooms, there is a bin, there is a football, and there are between 11 and 15 footballers. There is only one thing to do: try to complete a series of perfect headers back and forth before the final person heads the ball into the bin. Cue: limbs. It’s one of football’s greatest joys.
It turns out cricket teams do the same, but England’s Test team took it one step further this afternoon, during a rain break of day one of their match against Pakistan.
As the skies began to clear, but before play resumed, Joe Root’s side filled their time by attempting an audacious series of headers, starting at the balcony of the Old Trafford pavilion, ending in a bin down at pitch level.
Root and James Anderson got it started, before Chris Woakes headed the ball down to Mark Wood, who nodded it onto Jos Buttler, back to Dom Bess, onto Ollie Pope, before Wood added the final deft touch.
It’s a work of art and deserves to be recognised as such.
Watch it in all its glory here.
They did this first attempt… ⚽️😉
