The penultimate international break of 2017 is nearly upon us.
Should England beat Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday night, their spot at next summer’s World Cup will be secured – regardless of what happens elsewhere in Group F.
As his squad prepare for the game, Gareth Southgate has been hit with the news that Manchester United’s Phil Jones and Manchester City’s Fabien Delph have returned to their clubs with injuries.
As a result, Southgate has promoted Tottenham’s Harry Winks to the senior squad after he was initially named in the Under 21s side.
Winks played his first 90 minutes of the season for his club as they won 3-0 away at Huddersfield and has only recently returned from an ankle ligament injury he picked up towards the end of last season.
While Spurs fans were delighted by the news of Winks first call up to England’s senior squad, other fans weren’t all that impressed with Southgate’s decision. Some suggested Everton’s Tom Davies, Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey and Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere were more worthy of a call-up than the 21-year-old.

Nothing against him but Harry Winks' inclusion just shows it's who you play for rather than how you play. Shame.

Harry Winks gets a nod for the England squad whilst Tom Davies is sat there. Typical of @England no common sense only favouritism.

How the hell did Harry Winks get a call up ahead of the likes of Cork & Carroll who are regulars for their side?! #England

Imagine selecting Winks over Wilshere lol

Harry Winks and Jake Livermore getting the nod ahead of Jonjo for England is laughable

Harry Winks moving up to the England squad ahead of Tom Davies is as insulting as it gets from Gareth Southgate.
