Love him or hate him, Wayne Rooney is England’s record goalscorer and no one can take that away from him.
The FA have found the perfect way to mark the Manchester United captain’s 50th strike for his country, which saw him finally overtake Sir Bobby Charlton in the standings.
Thousands of fans tweeted their congratulations after Rooney tucked home a penalty in the win over Switzerland, and those who used the #Rooney50 hashtag will get to see their words of encouragement in a special display before the qualifier against Estonia.
A 20m by 20m flag will be unveiled before kick-off at Wembley, bearing the names – and the tweets – of some of the fans who congratulated the striker.
