Fan footage shows Jesse Lingard’s cup final winner as Manchester United supporters saw it

In the moment

Tom Victor

There’s only one thing better than seeing your team win a cup final – actually being in the stadium to witness the winning goal.

Manchester United fans were in dreamland on Saturday evening as Jesse Lingard’s extra-time volley secured FA Cup glory and a parting gift from manager Louis van Gaal.

And, thanks to this footage filmed from behind the goal by Super Jacdan, we can see just how their supporters reacted at the time.

United fans have been to enough games at Old Trafford to know the sight of Antonio Valencia running at a defender is no huge cause for excitement, but the mood soon changes when the ball leaves Lingard’s boot.

There really is no joy comparable to seeing your team score a likely winner at Wembley, especially when it comes out of almost nothing.

Perhaps this scene will take its place in FA Cup folklore alongside Wilfried Zaha’s tears, Tinie Tempah’s pre-match performance and Alan Pardew’s dancing.

What’s that, the goals are more important than the sideshow, you say? Nonsense.

Some will say the mere idea of having your phone out to film the game defeats the object of going to the match. While we agree on principle, we weren’t at the game, so we only have the positives of this clip and none of the negatives of nagging the person next to us to put their phone or camera away.

What we’re most impressed by is the fact that they still had battery life after nearly two hours of football (even if they were equipped with a phone and a camera on the day), and that they got such good quality zoom from way up in the stands.

You can certainly see more than in this Spurs supporter’s footage of celebrations after Harry Kane’s penalty against Manchester City.
