Fans take the piss as Manchester United bravely try ‘goal of the month’ competition

Ben Kenyon

Manchester United’s mantra of old was ‘Attack…Attack…Attack, Attack, Attack’.

Those halcyon days were fruitful and packed full of goals with names like Cantona, Cole and Rooney (remember him) banging them in for fun.

Remember the 1999/2000 season when they scored a massive 97 goals in a Premier League season? Good times.

Pickings are slim these days at Old Trafford, though. Last season they manage to score just 49 under manager Louis van Gaal and it’s not exactly been a goal fest since Jose Mourinho took over.

October was a particularly lean month on the United scoresheets with draws against Stoke, Liverpool and Burnley and then a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea in the league.

It was only their 4-1 thumping of Fenerbahce in the Europa League and narrow victory over rivals Manchester City in the EFL Cup that got pulses racing.

So you can imagine United’s ‘goal of the month’ competition wasn’t bursting with net-busters from Mourinho’s men.

Fans picked up on the fact that the club appeared to be scrabbling around for goals to fill the quota, with two coming from the youth team and two from the same Europa League match making the cut. (You can vote here, if you want.)

They certainly weren’t going to let United live it down either, with many commenting on Twitter.
