Alas, the story of Euro 2016 has come to an end.
It was an amazing achievement to get as far as they have, but Iceland were completely torn apart during the most one-sided first half of Euro 2016 as the hosts ran riot at the Stade de France.
Trailing 4-0 at half-time, Lars Lagerbäck’s side were sunk by goals from Olivier Giroud, Paul Pogba, Dimitri Payet and Antoine Griezmann, and the Icelanders will be going home despite winning the second half by a score of 2-1.
While it proved too high a mountain to climb on Sunday night, Iceland did come from behind against England in the last 16 and in light of their hammering at the hands of France, the 2-1 victory reflects even worse on Wayne Rooney and company that it did last Monday night.
It’s hardly a surprise that so many seemed keen to heap further misery on England, putting the cap on what has been a miserable week for English fans.
Gary Lineker had his say early on, and it he wasn’t alone in drawing parallels between England’s poor showing a week ago and France’s calm demolition on Sunday night.

England, already humiliated by Iceland, are now being humiliated by proxy by France.

And don't forget – Iceland were the better side against England and thoroughly deserved to win. France 4 Iceland 0 at half-time.

England may have been lucky that Iceland saved them from something like this. #FRAISL France v Germany promises to be mighty.
