Alex Hunter has gone from virtual character to philanthropy

For those of you out there who are not aware of the world of video games, Alex Hunter is a fictional character who is the star of The Journey, a game mode from EA Sports’ FIFA series of games.

In The Journey, you control Hunter across FIFA 17, 18 and 19 as he evolves from up-and-coming youngster at Manchester United to global superstar at Real Madrid.

Hunter is played by British actor Adetomiwa Edun, who provides the voice acting and character model for the player, and despite not being a real-life player, he has this weekend taken a stand which a number of other, more real players have.

In a video posted on their YouTube channel, the charity Common Goal announced Hunter as their latest benefactor.

In the clip, Hunter praises the work carried out by Common Goal, which was set up by Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata and has seen the likes of Mats Hummels, Alex Morgan, Kasper Schmichel and Georgio Chiellini pledge to donate one percent of their salaries to charity.

As part of the announcement, EA Sports has also donated £200,000 to streetfootballworld, the organisation which helped launch Common Goal.

“I am delighted to be able to announce this innovative agreement with EA”, said co-founder of Common Goal,  Jürgen Griesbeck.

“As one of the largest companies of its kind, with an important role within the broader football industry, this new relationship represents an exciting opportunity for all of us here at Common Goal.

“EA has an incredible reach, with fans of all ages across the world. We are eager, with their help, to further engage with an audience that really believes in our mission of changing the world for good through football.”
