The country has fours stars on its jersey despite only having won two World Cups.
FIFA has requested that Uruguay remove two of the four ‘World Cup’ stars from its football jersey.
On Tuesday, Puma revealed that after submitting kit designs for the national team, FIFA had asked for the removal of two of the stars above the team crest before the next World Cup in 2022.
Uruguay has only won two World Cups, in 1930 and 1950, but has four stars on its jersey to represent the Olympic titles the country won in 1924 and 1928.
Unsurprisingly, the Uruguay Football Association (AUF) is unhappy with the request and argues that the Olympic titles were officially considered world championships at the time.
Uruguay’s FA will reportedly meet with #FIFA via Zoom on Friday to present their evidence in favour of leaving the 4 stars on the crest

AUF vice president Gaston Tealdi said: “FIFA has always recognized, even publicly, that Uruguay has four World Cups because in 1924 and 1928 it [the Olympic football tournament] was organized by FIFA and it’s in 1930 when they decided to do the championships independently.”
He added that the association will now prepare documents that can validate the two stars and their corresponding wins, saying: “It’s an opportunity to regularize the situation and if this has to give rise to an express acknowledgment, it is welcomed.”
