Floyd Mayweather has been approached by the UFC for Octagon debut

Surely not

Floyd Mayweather has revealed that the UFC has been in touch about a potential mixed martial arts debut.

We wouldn’t hold our breath waiting for the 50-0 boxing great to make the switch to the Octagon but, apparently, the world’s preeminent MMA organisation wanted to see Mayweather come out of retirement for some five-minute rounds under their banner.

Mayweather hung up his gloves for good in August after making a return to the ring for a special, one-off fight with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor under boxing rules.

‘Money’ stopped McGregor in the 10th round of their cross-sport clash in Las Vegas before promptly returning to retirement with an extra $300 million in his pocket.

The meeting of combat sports’ two biggest pay-per-view draws was pretty one-sided when it eventually went down in the T-Mobile Arena but it would definitely be a different story if takedowns, submissions, kicks, elbows and knees were permitted.

And Mayweather has revealed in a recent rant on Instagram that he’d been contacted about a potential rematch with ‘The Notorious’ with 4oz. gloves.

“You already know I’m a money-getting motherfucker,” Mayweather said. “I’m Money May.

“They just called me not too long ago and asked me to come back. I can come right back to the UFC. If I want, I can go, I can come right back to the UFC, I can go fight in the Octagon.

“I can do a three- or four-fight deal in the Octagon and make a billion dollars. Remember, I’m Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, and you motherfuckers love me, and I love you motherfuckers.”

Mayweather has retired on several occasions in the past, only to come back when a lucrative fight would present itself.

The 40-year-old clearly saw McGregor as an easy payday but we don’t reckon the earning potential of a UFC fight would be enough to tempt him to sign on the dotted line.

“I’m so tough at what I do, they had to go to a whole other barbarian sport to go get a motherfucker that would try to fuck with me,” he said.

“And you already know what I did with that. Lights out, party’s over, you can kiss the babies.

“It’s bankroll, you know, all I do is dress, flex and progress. And you already know I went from the streets to the executive suites.”

It was recently suggested that Mayweather was considering yet another comeback and that he’d been in the gym, keeping his tools sharp, but until he gets some grappling practice under his belt, we shouldn’t expect a UFC debut from the masterful pugilist.
