Football fans cheat death after stand in Spain collapses during goal celebration

Five fans were taken to the hospital

Deportivo La Coruna football fans cheated death after a barrier gave way during their celebration of Alberto Quiles’ winning goal.

TV footage from the game shows two rows of Deportivo supporters fall inches from Quiles as the barrier gave way. Women and children were among those to fall, yet remarkably no one was killed in the chaos.

It is understood that five people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

In the 89th minute of Wednesday’s league game between third-tier Spanish sides Zamora and Deportivo, fans flooded the barrier after the goalscorer began celebrating near them. Paramedics in Zamora were quick to the scene, reports the Mail Online.

A broken ankle and a knee injury were among the injuries, but none were reported to be life-threatening or particularly serious. The game did continue after it was confirmed there were no serious injuries.

Local fire chief Moncho Trigueros said: ‘With the celebration after the Deportivo goal, the away fans have rushed forward and the barrier gave way with the avalanche of people and several have plunged to the ground.

A spokesperson for Zamora said an internal investigation is underway, adding: “Zamora FC regrets the injuries suffered by the Deportivo de la Coruna supporters after the incident involving a barrier at our stadium during the goal celebration.

They continued: “The club would like to thank the Red Cross, Civil Protection workers, and police as well as the club representatives present in the stadium for their quick reaction. We wish a speedy recovery to each and everyone of the people hurt.”

A local police source said the “images speak for themselves,” and it was a “miracle” no one was seriously hurt.
