Alvaro Morata finally breaks Atlético Madrid duck with absolute beauty of a team goal

Who said Cholo’s Atlético Madrid don’t play sexy football?

Chelsea loanee Alvaro Morata has had an especially tough time of it of late, no more so than on Wednesday night when his towering header against Juventus was disallowed after a VAR review, which spotted a small push on the suddenly floppy hardman Giorgio Chiellini.

Even so, it appears he has his mojo back and his all-round contribution for Diego Simeone’s side has been superb since joining.

He was, however, visibly delighted to get his first goal for Los Colchoneros. So he should be. What a fucking goal it was.

The move starts with Antoine Griezmann and his ballerina feet popping up on the right flank and controlling a long ball like a fireman catching a baby tossed from a burning building.

Griezmann carries it and under no pressure fires out a ball down the right for the overlapping fullback Santiago Arias. Arias brings Morata into play, lurking on the edge of the box, but the Spanish target man shows a patience that belies his current lack of goals and chooses not to rush a shot. He plays it back to Griezmann, now supporting the move he created, who lays it to Rodri, a tall, devastatingly elegant midfielder in the Busquets mould.

Rodri finds Filipe Luis, mirroring the endeavour of Arias’ on the left, who swings it in first time towards Morata. And Alvaro, well, he does the rest, smashing in a wonderful left foot volley hard and low into the corner.

The whole move is a thing of beauty.
