Arsenal have been relegated from the Argentina Primera División

Their draw against Chacarita wasn't enough

After a 16 year stay

Arsenal Fútbol Club were relegated from the Argentine Primera Division this weekend after a 16 year stay in the top flight.

Arsenal fought to salvage a point in a 2-2 draw against Chacarita Juniors, which might have been enough, had Patronato not beaten Rosario Central 3-0. That result left Arsenal adrift at the bottom of the descenso table, and their fate was confirmed.

Their time in the top tier has brought moments of great joy, when they won the Copa Sudamericana in 2007 and the Primera title in 2012. But relegation has been looming for a while since their founder and former AFA President Julio Grondona passed away, which triggered a sharp decline.

Boca Juniors have topped the league on 50 points, winning 16 games and only losing three. Carlos Tevez returned to Boca recently for his third spell at this boyhood club but recently picked up an injury while playing football in prison during a visit to his brother.

Argentine football, if you hadn’t gathered, is full of crazy stories, and crazy tackles.
