Champions League final could move to Wembley after UK travel list announcement

UEFA are holding talks with the government over bringing the Champions League final to Wembley

Following the recent announcement that Turkey has been added to the UK’s red list of countries, travel restrictions could see the 2021 Champions League Final will be moved to Wembley.

As per a number of outlets, UEFA are thought to be meeting with the British government today and hope to reach a decision by tomorrow (Tuesday 11th May).

The original location for the conclusion to this year’s competition was that Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul; although travel restrictions are set to relax on the 17th of May, the rise in COVID-19 cases and given that it will be an all-English final, common sense would suggest moving it to Wembley.

The last time the final was held in London was 2013, which saw current holders Bayern Munich beat Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund 2-1, with that late goal from Arjen Robben.

Travel secretary, Grant Shapps, had already advised fans not to travel to the original destination over growing concerns around Turkey’s coronavirus cases, but this change would make life much easier for both Chelsea and Manchester City fans.

The original date of the final was the 29th of May, however, this is also when the Championship play-off final was due to be held. That being said, the EFL have said they are open to moving the schedule to accommodate the Champions League final.

Turkey being added to the red list has already threatened the Formula Turkish Grand Prix and it seems that, in this case, Wembley is the most likely destination.

The iconic London stadium was also already hosting a number of Euro 2020 games and following Dublin having to drop out as one of the venues, has now been given an extra round of 16 match too.

It’s been a big year for football in England and given the Super League scandal, this would be a perfect way to end things on a more positive note.
