Conor McGregor has revealed that he is serious about trying to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich, insisting that he is keen to purchase a football club.

It comes after the MMA star tweeted that he was preparing a £1.5billion bid for the west London outfit after Russian billionaire Abramovich announced he was selling the club.

Many felt that McGregor’s proposal wasn’t serious, especially considering that he is known for saying things in jest on social media.

However, the Irishman has since confirmed that he is seriously interested in purchasing Chelsea from Abramovich, as well as claiming that Manchester United and Celtic were both being ‘explored’.

Responding to speculation about whether or not he will try to buy Chelsea, McGregor – who later removed his post – tweeted: “I do not speak in jest. I am exploring this, as I said.

“Celtic from Dermot Desmond, Manchester United from the Glaziers, and now the recently up for sale Chelsea football club. All being explored.

“A football franchise purchase is in my future make no mistake about it.”

It is thought that McGregor’s £1.5bn bid is way off the £3bn Abramovich is asking for. However, Sky reported that McGregor’s management company – Paradigm Sports – is working with McGregor Sports & Entertainment and Empowerment IP Capital – which is headed up by sports financier Stephen Duval.

Other reports have suggested that McGregor’s consortium are in discussions with a major global asset management company, who could provide the financial backing for the deal.

Several bidders are thought to be interested in purchasing the Blues, with more than 300 parties having expressed interest in buying the club, according to ESPN.

At least 10 of those are reported to be credible buyers, with the capability of funding the £3bn takeover.
