It’s City’s to lose now, David
David De Gea’s been having a tough week. Everton put four goals past him at the weekend, hot on the back of a 3-0 Barcelona beating which featured a heinous fumble by Spain’s number one.
At that moment Barca were only 1-0 up, Manchester United were feasibly in the game at the Nou Camp. But a slow, low drive from Messi to De Gea’s left made it 2-0 and the Catalan outfit were away.
Not happy with a Goodison humiliation and being dumped out of the Champions League quarter-finals, David decided to hand victory in the Manchester derby to United’s sky blue enemy.
City’s first goal beat De Gea at his near post. Bernardo Silva did well to disguise his shot with Luke Shaw’s covering run, but really that’s an excuse.
The second was inexcusable. Another low shot at the near post, this time from Leroy Sane. Plenty of time, line of sight, and yet De Gea’s right shin could only scuff the ball into his net.
Contract negotiations? The Spanish press have vilified him of late. Maybe he’s just not that good.
City are now one point ahead of Liverpool in the Premier League title race. Both teams have three fixtures left, City’s the easier of the lot, and Liverpool also face Barca in the Champions League semis.
