It was a hectic end to the Championship season
Today marked the end of the Football League season, and unlike the Premier League, there was still a lot at stake. Cardiff hosted Reading, and a 0-0 draw secured their automatic promotion to the Premier League, making the Bluebirds the fourth club Neil Warnock’s has led to the top flight.
At the bottom of the table, Birmingham earned survival by beating promotion challengers Fulham 3-1, with the west London club having to settle for a play-off place.
Bolton welcomed Nottingham Forest to the Macron Stadium needing a win to survive, which they got after a goal-packed last half hour. Two goals in the 87th and 88th minute from David Wheater and Aaron Wilbraham made sure that Bolton would remain in the second tier for at least another season.
As a result, Burton Albion were relegated back to League One, as they lost to Preston North End courtesy of a 93rd minute goal from Louis Moult.
Burton have been punching well above their weight for the past two years, mixing it with some sleeping giants in the Championship despite having a stadium that holds a mere 6,912 people.
Today’s results will leave a sour taste for Nottingham Forest. They survived with 53 points, but their failure to beat Bolton played a part in relegating Burton, who are managed by Nigel Clough, son of Forest legend Brian Clough.
