“Please take good care of our Donny”

Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has written an open letter to his former club, encouraging him to take good care of new signing Donny van de Beek.

The Dutch midfielder joined Manchester United from Ajax for £35 million plus add-ons this week.

Edwin van der Sar is currently the CEO of Ajax.

“Dear Manchester United fans,” the letter begins. “I see our paths have crossed again”.

“One of ours is joining you this season. And like so many players before him, he’s been with us since he was just a little boy.”

“Shortly after his debut, he became our of the best. Especially the last couple of years were amazing. From the Europa League final (no hard feelings) to our Champions League run and winning the Dutch Championship.”

“The team he was part of showed the world who we are and what Ajax stands for.”

“Like you, we pride ourselves on being one of the best at developing talent and giving young players a shot at the highest level. You could say your new star is the embodiment of that pride.”

“That’s one of many reasons we don’t like to see him leave, but we understand it’s time for him to move on. To dream on.”

“And where better to do that than your theatre. Trust me, I know.”

van der Sar signs off the letter with: “Please take good care of our Donny, and help him dream.”

Like Donny van de Beek, Edwin van der Sar started his career at Ajax. He made 226 appearances for the Dutch side between 1900 and 1999.

After moving to Juventus, and then Fulham, van der Sar arrived at Manchester United in 2005, where he became one of their greatest ever goalkeepers.

After retirement, he was made Ajax marketing director in 2012, and was promoted to CEO in 2016.
