On Sunday, Zinedine Zidane confirmed that his Real Madrid side will not give Barcelona a guard of honour, if they have won La Liga by the time the two sides meet at the Camp Nou in May.
The Frenchman said they were breaking with tradition because Barcelona refused to hold a guard of honour themselves after Real won the Club World Cup win in December.
“We will not give a guard of honour, this is my decision,” Zidane told press ahead of the derby with Atletico. “Barcelona didn’t follow the tradition when we won the Club World Cup. This is my decision.
“I don’t understand the guard of honour and it won’t take place, although we are far from the end of the season.
“Barcelona broke the tradition.”
It has become a touchy point in Spain, but Gerard Pique is not fazed by it at all. When asked what he thought of Zidane’s decision, he replied with a cheeky smile:
“I’m not going to sleep tonight”
