The responses are… mixed

Arsenal today announced that midfielder Granit Xhaka has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

Newly appointed Arsenal boss Unai Emery said: “I’m delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us. He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more. I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”

Arsenal have not disclosed how long the contract is, but it is expected to last four or five years.

Xhaka has been widely criticised during his time at Arsenal for sloppy mistakes after he was signed from Borussia Mönchengladbach to tighten up Arsenal’s midfield. The responses to this news therefore were mixed.

He is a polarising player, who some believe was being held back by the lack of an organised system under Arsène Wenger. Many fans are optimistic that his performances will pick up under Emery.

Xhaka is currently with Switzerland for the World Cup, with new teammate Stephan Lichtsteiner who recently joined Arsenal on a free transfer from Juventus.
