Dreams do come true
Two years is a long time in football. At the time of the last World Cup, nobody had heard of Marcus Rashford, yet he was called up by Roy Hodgson to go to Euro 2016. At the time of Euro 2016, nobody would have expected Harry Maguire, who travelled to the tournament as a fan, to be a starter at the World Cup in 2018.
Yet here we are. Joint top of the group after smashing Panama 6-1, with Harry Maguire in defence.
Two years ago at the Euros, Maguire travelled to France to watch England from the stands with a group of mates, at least two of whom could be his brothers.
After it was announced that Maguire would be part of the England squad for this World Cup, he tweeted a picture of him and his friends in Marseille from two years ago with the caption: “2 years ago watching England in France with my mates. Now on the plane to Russia. How things have changed. #AlwaysBelieve.”
After England’s victory this afternoon, Harry Maguire went over to the same group of mates in the stadium and recreated the photograph.
