South Korea rocked the world yesterday
Despite having nothing to play for, South Korea fought until there was nothing left in the tank, right up until the final minute, and pulled off a shock 2-0 win over Germany, knocking out the reigning champions, who finished bottom of their group.
To say the result was unexpected would be an understatement. It was assumed that Germany would beat South Korea, and that Mexico would beat Sweden, but football is a funny old game. As it turned out, South Korea’s win kept Mexico in the competition.
Germany are the first of the favourites to be knocked out, after Spain, Portugal and Argentina all scraped through the group stage.
Their fate was not as embarrassing as Italy’s, though – the four time World Cup champions failed to qualify as they suffered a 1-0 loss over two legs to Sweden in the autumn.
One of Italy’s most famous sports newspapers, Corriere dello Sport, took this opportunity for a hilarious front page splash with both hands.
The headline reads ‘Ci vediamo in spiaggia’, which translates to ‘see you at the beach’. You’d imagine many Germans will be needing a holiday after the horror of seeing their team humbled by already eliminated South Korea.
