Yes, you read that correctly
Leeds United sacked Paul Heckingbottom last week and did so in true Leeds fashion, waiting until after a clause expired in his contract that would have entitled him to a million pound pay-off.
Heckingbottom had only won four of his 16 games in charge at Elland Road and was destined for the chop, it was a matter of when, not if. Now, it’s a matter of whom, as the club are scouting out their new manager, and the front runner is not a name you would associate with the Championship.
According to several reports, Leeds are in advanced negotiations with Marcelo Bielsa and could appoint him as their new manager. Bielsa is currently without a job having been sacked by Lille back in December after a poor run of results.
The Argentine is often cited by the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Pep Guardiola as their biggest footballing influence, as one a pioneer of the modern high-pressing football that we see at the top level today.
Bielsa has no major honours to his name as a manager but his influence on the game stretches beyond trophies.
However, the high physical demands that he places on players as well as the obvious language barrier could be a recipe for disaster at Leeds, who are never hesitant to sack a manager if things aren’t going their way.
