Liverpool produce beautiful Hillsborough tribute ahead of 30th anniversary

Wayne Farry

The 30th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster will take place on Monday

Players and supporters paid tribute to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster on Sunday, a day prior to the 30th anniversary.

Players and fans of both Liverpool and visiting side Chelsea paid their respects prior to Sunday’s match at Anfield, with the Kop End holding aloft cards to display ’96’ in yellow against a background of red and white.

The tribute was held to commemorate the lives of the 96 people who were killed during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989. 766 people were injured.

The tribute, accompanied by a minute’s silence, was beautifully observed by all in attendance at Anfield ahead of Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Liverpool kept themselves in contention for a first Premier League title and lifted themselves ahead of Manchester City – who have a game in hand – thanks to two second half goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
