This is a cruel blow for the former Charlton man
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been ruled out of the Champions League final and will likely miss the World Cup after undergoing surgery on an ankle injury which has affected him for months.
The 20-year-old has featured more than 30 times for Liverpool this season, but recuperation from the surgery comes just four weeks prior to England’s first World Cup warm up game, meaning that it is unlikely he will recover in time.
Gomez took to Instagram to confirm that he will indeed miss out on playing action until next season, saying that he is “gutted” to confirm his season is over.
In the message he thanks people for their support and reiterated his desire to return in the “best possible shape” next season.
Gutted to confirm that my season for both club and country is over having undergone successful ankle surgery…
Been a tough few weeks trying everything possible to be available on the pitch to help the team. I’m going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre season. The focus now is to support the team in the two biggest games of the season!
Thank you for all the support over the course of the season ??

The injury is the second suffered by a Liverpool player and World Cup hopeful late in the season after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered serious knee ligament damage during Liverpool’s Champions League victory against Roma in their semi-final first leg.
