The claims have been described as “lazy journalism”.
The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) has today hit back at claims made by an article in The Times suggesting that the club may soon hand out song sheets to supporters in a bid to improve the Old Trafford atmosphere.
The report, published in the newspaper today, claimed that the Manchester United hierarchy were considering implementing song sheets – either via the matchday programme or individually printed sheets – as well as continental-style cheerleaders; fans with megaphones who are tasked with hyping up the crowd.
However, speaking to JOE today, Ian Stirling of MUST revealed that the idea – which was suggested by a single member of the official fans forum and received no support – had been misrepresented in the media.
Stirling described the report as “lazy journalism” and suggested that it detracts from actual work being carried out by fan groups such as MUST.
Among the ideas put forward to the club which are being seriously considered include: moving younger fans into certain areas of the stadium to create a more vibrant atmosphere, the possible introduction of safe standing and further discussions with the club around the topic of ticket pricing.
Stirling added that MUST is pleased to be working the club to address serious issues, and that the relocation of home supporters to areas usually inhabited by away fans during the club’s last home game against Brighton was a positive development which was welcomed by supporters, the manager and the players.
