Manchester United meet release clause of Porto defender Diogo Dalot

The 19-year-old could be Jose Mourinho’s first signing of the summer

Manchester United are on the verge of signing Portuguese right-back Diogo Dalot, more commonly known simply as Dalot, after the club reportedly met his release clause of £17.5 million.

The youngster has made just six senior appearances for FC Porto, and made his Primeira Liga debut for the club in February of this year, but has already tasted success in his young career, helping Portugal to win the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2016.

It is believed that Dalot will be used as understudy for current right-back and captain Antonio Valencia, who – despite being 32 years old – was behind only Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku for minutes played by an outfielder at Old Trafford last season.

Considering both Dalot’s and Valencia’s respective ages, it is likely the youth international could feature heavily next season, especially given the fact previous understudy Matteo Darmian appears to be on the verge of a move back to Italy with Juventus.

Dalot’s signing is expected to be the first of many at Old Trafford this summer. The club is said to be close to securing the services of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Brazilian attacker Fred, and have also made serious inquiries about Tottenham’s
