Manchester United’s new leaked kit takes inspiration from classic 1999 shirt

The leaked kit has a nod to one of Manchester United’s nicest ever shirts

Manchester United’s kit for the 2019/20 season has leaked on the internet, and – if accurate – it appears to take inspiration from the shirt during the club’s successful Champions League campaign in 1998/99.

The shirt, leaked and published on – yes, you guessed it – Footy Headlines, once again features the traditional red with the secondary colour being black, rather than white.

On the shoulders of the shirt is the three adidas stripes, in dark red compared to this season’s black adidas stripes. As with this season’s version, there is the black adidas logo, and then we come to the nod back to 1999.

The crest on the kit – which is black and gold – is within a badge which is similar in shape to that which featured on the classic kit, as well as their Champions League shirt from 2006/07.

Those two shirts from history – pictured below – are some of the most fondly remembered in the club’s history, and are understandably synonymous with some of their best periods of success.

The 2006/07 version featured a white background to the surrounding badge, as did the original, but adidas’ seeming new focus on black as a secondary colour is presumably behind their decision to give the new badge the darker background.

According to Footy Headlines, the new kit will come with white shorts and black shorts; a change from this season’s black shorts.
