Don’t mention the Premier League title race to Marcus Rashford.
Some Manchester United fans may be getting a tad over-excited and giddy at the prospect of challenging fierce rivals Liverpool for the Premier League title, but their star forward and the unofficial Prime Minister of the country is having none of it. In fact he only wants to focus on winning football games without any added pressure of usurping their Merseyside foes.
Despite the valiant efforts of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night, Manchester United stole all three points in their final game of 2020 with an opportunistic strike from Rashford in injury time, following a raking long distance assist from (of course) Bruno Fernandes.
“We can’t look too far ahead,” Rashford admitted to Amazon Prime after his last-gasp winner against plucky Wolves. “We are a team that is still doing a lot of work on ourselves and to be looking at the table so early on in the season is a bit stupid of us.
“We have to take it one game at a time and if we can keep finding ways to win like this we will see where we are at the end of the season.” Manchester United currently sit second, only two points behind defending Champions Liverpool.
Rashford’s sentiments were echoed by his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer:
“There’s no title race after 15 games. You can lose the chance of being in the race in the first 10 games of course but play another 15 and get to 30 maybe, then we can start talking about it when we’ve at least played more than half the season.”
