West Yorkshire Police confirmed the Scot was punched in the face outside a bar in Leeds

Gary McAllister was left requiring hospital treatment after being attacked in Leeds city centre, and a man has now been arrested in connection with the incident.

After attending Liverpool legends’ game with AC Milan at Anfield last weekend, the former midfielder spent the evening in the Yorkshire city with his wife. In the early hours of Sunday morning, he is said to have been stood outside a bar when punched in the face.

It left McAllister needing hospital treatment and West Yorkshire Police confirmed on Friday that they had arrested and subsequently released a 32-year-old man.

“Police have arrested a man in connection with an assault which happened in Leeds city centre last weekend,” read a statement.

“The incident happened on Sunday 24 March at around 4am where a male in his fifties was assaulted in Call Lane.

“The male victim was stood outside a bar when a man approached him and punched him in the face causing injuries that required hospital treatment.

“A 32-year-old male was arrested last night (28 March) in connection with this incident. He has been released under investigation and enquiries remain ongoing.”

McAllister, 54, spent two successful years with Liverpool after signing from Coventry City in 2000, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup in his first season at the club. Since retiring from playing, he has gone into coaching and is currently part of Steven Gerrard’s backroom team at Rangers.
